PTFE Requires Specialized Processing

PTFE (Teflon) is notoriously difficult to fabricate. The material resists adhesion, drills differently from FR-4, and requires plasma treatment for plated through-holes.

Our factory partners have dedicated PTFE production lines with sodium etch, plasma desmear, and controlled lamination processes specifically for fluoropolymer substrates.

This is why we don't just accept any PTFE order — we verify fabrication feasibility based on your specific substrate choice, copper weight, and via requirements before confirming.

PTFE PCB (Also Called Teflon PCB)

A PTFE PCB is often called a Teflon PCB — Teflon is DuPont's brand name for the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) dielectric these boards are built on. The naming is interchangeable in datasheets and RFQs, but the substrate is the same fluoropolymer that gives these boards their extremely low dielectric loss.

That low loss is why Teflon PCB substrates dominate demanding RF and microwave work: mmWave links above 40GHz, 77GHz automotive radar, satellite transponders, and phased-array antennas where every fraction of a dB of insertion loss matters. When a design outgrows standard laminates but doesn't yet justify pure PTFE, a hybrid PTFE + FR-4 stackup keeps RF performance on the signal layers while cutting cost elsewhere.

FAQs

PTFE PCB Questions

When should I use PTFE instead of Rogers?

When you need Df below 0.002 (Rogers RO4350B is 0.0037). PTFE substrates offer the lowest dielectric loss available — essential for mmWave (>40GHz), satellite, and precision measurement applications.

Is PTFE more expensive than Rogers?

Comparable or slightly higher, depending on the substrate. The main cost difference comes from specialized processing (plasma, sodium etch) rather than raw material cost.

Can you do hybrid PTFE + FR-4?

Yes. PTFE signal layers with FR-4 structural/power layers. This reduces cost while keeping RF performance where needed. Requires careful thermal management during lamination.

What is the lead time for PTFE boards?

10-14 days typical, depending on substrate availability. We check stock before confirming. Common substrates (F4BM220, F4BME220) usually ship faster.

What is the minimum order for PTFE PCB?

One piece. We do not require minimum quantities even for exotic PTFE substrates. Material is cut from stock sheets per order.

Need PTFE / Teflon PCB?

6 substrate options from Dk 2.2 to 3.5. 1-piece MOQ. Material certification included.
